Is this recipe for you?

This is an excellent treatment for anyone with fine, thinning, or limp hair that struggles to hold volume. It's a great way to get a temporary but noticeable boost in body.

Recipe is best for hair type

Ideal for fine hair types (Type 1 and 2). It provides noticeable body and texture. While beneficial for all types, coarser hair (Type 3 and 4) will notice more of the conditioning and shine effects rather than a dramatic thickening one.

Recipe is helpful for

Fine hair, Thinning hair, Limp or flat hair, Lack of volume and body.

INGREDIENTs highlight

This recipe helps with hair conditioning.

How this recipe works

This treatment creates temporary thickness and volume. Castor oil is extremely viscous and coats each hair strand, making it feel substantially thicker and adding weight. When it dries, it provides light structure and body. The egg provides protein to fortify the hair, while glycerine ensures the hair remains hydrated and flexible, preventing the protein and castor oil from making hair feel stiff.

caution: before you begin

ALWAYS RINSE WITH COOL WATER. Hot water will cook the egg in your hair and make it very difficult to remove. This treatment focuses on the scalp but can be worked through the ends as well. Castor oil is thick, so be prepared to shampoo well to remove it all.

CAUTION: Allergens

Contains: Eggs.

Tools & UTENSILS

what you will need

• Castor Oil: A thick, viscous oil that coats the hair shaft, adding temporary thickness and body. It hardens slightly when exposed to air, helping to create a fuller appearance. • Egg: The protein reinforces the hair strand, while the fatty yolk acts as a natural conditioner. • Glycerine: A powerful humectant that pulls moisture into the hair, providing hydration without weighing it down. • Apple Cider Vinegar: Helps clarify the scalp and smooths the cuticle for better shine.

ingredients

• Egg • Castor oil • Apple cider vinegar • Glycerine

• 1 whole egg • 28 g / 1 oz • 5 g / 0.17 oz • 6 g / 0.2 oz

how to make it

1. Mix Ingredients: In a non-metal bowl, whisk the egg, castor oil, apple cider vinegar, and glycerine until you have a smooth, uniform mixture. A blender can also be used for an even creamier consistency. 2. Apply to Scalp: Massage the mixture thoroughly into your scalp. 3. Add Heat: Cover your head with a shower cap. For best results, either sit under a hair steamer or wrap your head in a hot, damp towel. Leave on for 15-20 minutes. 4. Wash Off: Rinse hair thoroughly with COOL or LUKEWARM WATER to prevent the egg from scrambling. Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioning routine.

Pro-tip

Scalp Health: The act of massaging the mixture into the scalp is just as beneficial as the ingredients, as it can help to stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles. For Dry Ends: If your ends are very dry, you can add an extra teaspoon of glycerine or another oil like olive oil to the mixture that you apply from the mid-lengths down.

a quick note

budget

The four ingredients used are inexpensive and multi-purpose, making this a very low-cost and high-impact hair treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Dislacimer

Dislacimer

Why does this make hair feel thicker? Is it permanent?

The effect is temporary. Castor oil is a very thick, heavy oil that physically coats each strand of hair, making it feel and appear thicker and fuller. This coating washes out with shampoo. It does not permanently change the structure of your hair.

Dislacimer

Will this help my hair grow?

While massaging the scalp can stimulate blood flow which promotes a healthy environment for growth, the conditioner itself primarily works to improve the appearance of your existing hair. Castor oil is popularly used to support healthy hair growth, but its effects vary by person.

Dislacimer

Is castor oil hard to wash out?

Yes, it can be. It is much heavier than oils like coconut or olive oil. You may need to shampoo twice to completely remove it. Applying shampoo before adding water can help break down the oil more effectively.

Dislacimer

What is glycerine and do I need it?

Glycerine is a type of sugar alcohol found in many cosmetic products that acts as a humectant—it draws moisture from the air into your hair. It's highly recommended in this recipe to ensure your hair stays hydrated and soft, as protein treatments can sometimes be drying.
