INGREDIENTs highlight
This treatment helps with hair growth and conditioning.
How this recipe works
This treatment strengthens hair by applying plant-based protein directly to the strands. Hair is made of a protein called keratin. The high protein content in lentils can help temporarily patch and reinforce weak spots in the hair's cuticle. Blending the soaked lentils creates a starchy, creamy paste that also provides a mild cleansing and powerful softening effect, similar to a co-wash, without stripping natural oils.
caution: before you begin
The most critical step is to blend the lentils into a perfectly smooth paste. Any remaining grit will be difficult to rinse from the hair. Ensure all of the paste is rinsed out to avoid residue as it dries. This is a messy process; it is best done in the shower.
CAUTION: Allergens
None of the 14 major food allergens. Lentils are a legume, be mindful if you have specific legume allergies.
Tools & UTENSILS
what you will need
• Lentils (any kind): A nutritional powerhouse packed with protein, the primary building block of hair. They are also rich in minerals like iron, zinc, and potassium, as well as B vitamins, all of which are essential for healthy hair follicle function.
ingredients
• Dry lentils • Water
• 192 g / 6.8 oz • As needed
how to make it
1. Soak Lentils: Place 1 cup of dry lentils in a bowl and cover with several inches of water. Allow them to soak for at least 2 hours, or overnight for the best results. 2. Blend to Paste: Drain the soaked lentils. Place them in a high-speed blender with just enough fresh water to create a completely smooth, creamy paste. The consistency should be like a thick yogurt. This step is crucial; any lumps will be difficult to rinse out. 3. Apply: On damp hair, massage the paste into the scalp and work it through to the ends, ensuring every strand is coated. 4. Wait & Rinse: Let the paste sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to ensure all lentil particles are rinsed away.
Pro-tip
Which Lentil to Use? Red lentils (masoor dal) soften easily and blend into a very smooth paste. Green or brown lentils also work well. Black lentils (urad dal) can also be used. Boost Conditioning: Add 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt or a teaspoon of honey to the paste for extra softness and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Dislacimer
Will this lather like shampoo?
No, not at all. This is a non-foaming cleanser. The paste's creamy, starchy texture and the manual action of massaging it into your scalp is what cleanses your hair. Think of it more like a co-wash or a cleansing conditioner.
Dislacimer
Is this a shampoo or a conditioner?
It functions as both. It gently cleanses the hair while also delivering a strong dose of protein and leaving the hair feeling very soft and conditioned. One blog review noted it didn't remove oil well, but worked excellently as a conditioning treatment after a regular shampoo.

My hair feels stiff after protein treatments. Will this do that?
It's possible. "Protein overload" can happen if your hair doesn't need protein, making it feel brittle. This lentil mask is generally less intense than commercial treatments. If you are concerned, start by leaving it on for a shorter time (5-10 minutes) or follow up with a moisturizing, protein-free conditioner.

Is it really effective?
Consuming lentils is scientifically proven to be great for hair growth by providing internal nutrients like iron, protein, and B vitamins. While topical use is a traditional remedy, experts say it can provide direct nourishment, complementing dietary intake for overall hair health.
